Your task: Research, explore, and build your knowledge of hydroponic gardening, and find inspiration in thematically linked media connected to our Community Garden Project.
It's time to get after it, guys. Today we begin building our hydroponic how-to knowledge. In typical STEAM style, we won't simply learn the nuts and bolts of hydroponic systems, we'll be mining information for inspiration, and we'll be using our awesome collaborative power to continue the goals of our Community Garden Project.
We will accomplish today's task by rotating through a series of stations. A gentle and loving reminder from your teachers: like everything you do -- you'll get out of this what you put into it. We encourage you to approach this and all learning with curious, open minds, and a workman like attitude.
So...
Here's what you'll need today to be successful:
Here's how it will work:
You'll travel room-to-room, station-to-station. You'll have a buffet of learning today. (Yep, you heard that right...buffet.) That is, you'll have several videos, articles, web sites, media to engage with at each "station" and you're responsible for taking notes and digesting (sorry couldn't help it) information and ideas on the most relevant information you discover.
A word on Discovery Notes:
These notes are a loose version of Cornell notes, if you're familiar. An important part of research and study is inquiry, hence the question column. Feel free to use bulleted points in the center Notes column, make sure to jot down the source from which your information is derived in the Source column, and at the bottom, SUM UP your learning IN YOUR OWN WORDS in the Summary box.
Let's go get 'em! Have fun. Learn hard.

Your Friday looks a bit different today. You'll notice some other teachers covering periods 2-4 so your STEM teachers can confer with you students about your progress and place in the Academy. We're so excited to talk to you one-on-one, and we've lined up a pretty sweet Friday for you, too.
Have fun & make it a great day!
2nd period: WHAT IS GOOD FOOD? Mind Maps

Please follow the steps below:
Directions:
- Talk, talk, talk, talk, and talk. Share your ideas. Talk about what's important. Talk about why people should care about the issue your group is examining.
- Research and look for information and inspiration. What you decide to search is completely and entirely up to you, your group, and your needs. Y'all hear me?
- Fill out the outline provided. Break it down into parts if you want. Assign jobs and divide the work. Again, it's up to the team.
- Create a well thought-out and WELL DESIGNED presentation, that effectively communicates information and engages the audience.

A note from your teachers:
At either the end of 4th period OR early next week, your group will share out your presentation in a head-to-head match up style with any other groups who share your topic. Teachers will organize and direct this. You will then WORK TOGETHER to decide which group made the most compelling presentation, which will ultimately be shared next Friday to determine the official STEM Academy Project for the 2016-17 school year.
Remember: we're all in this together.
This work is not about a single individual -- teachers and students alike. It is about coming together as a TEAM and using our collective talents to contribute, to learn, and to serve our community. This is important work, and it is important that we take it seriously. But it is EVEN MORE important that we support one another, celebrate our successes, and raise one another up.
That's how teams work, that's how communities are built, and that's how people come together to create change.
Go be the change, guys.
