What is good food?
Why is it so important to people?

Food Memories Recipe Task
Food Lit Family Dinner 2016

Your task: Share a special dish and participate in our third annual “family dinner.”

Imagine every covered dish dinner you’ve ever been to --church functions, summer picnics, family reunions, special luncheons, team banquets, and so on. I’m not sure about you, but I’ve never met a potluck dinner I didn’t like! Potlucks are the best in my book because people tend to show up with tried-and-true yummy food, and well, what’s not to like?
Of course, for our purposes: good food. This will be the cherry on top of our “good food findings.” How can a meal you share with your classmates continue to develop your ideas of (yep, you got it) “good food”?

Directions:

  • Decide one family recipe or favorite recipe you’d like to share with the class. You’ll need to pick one easy enough to pull off in a week, given time, expenses, and how much help you’ll need in the kitchen.
  • Find your recipe by talking to a family member, looking through cookbooks, or searching the web.
  • Plan for and prepare your dish to share with your class next Monday, December 19.
  • Bring a copy of your recipe and “its story.” (See mentor texts and model :)
  • Your participation will be rewarded with points in the gradebook.

A few notes:

It is extremely important that you adhere to food allergies posted in the classroom.

If you are unable to bring in food, please see me for an alternative assignment.

Mrs. Hilliard's Model
There’s Nothing To It

It’s the simplest, most requested dessert you could ever dream up. My maw-maw would say, “honey, there’s nothing to it” and I’d never believe her. Because this dessert tastes like its name: Lemon Breeze. Lemon Breeze is straight outta 1960-something and its salty, sweet, dense, fluffy contrasts make it not only a breeze, but a delight.

Maw-maw died a couple of years back, and the family never fought over anything. My maw-maw and I were incredibly close. I considered her a second mother. She was my neighbor, my friend and confidant, my truest fan. And when she died, I got more than my fair share of “stuff” to remember her by – an entire box of vintage Blenko glass, all of the photos, my grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s wedding bands. To borrow a line from Whitman, my basement “contains multitudes.” But what I didn’t end up with was her cookbooks. This woman who was a cook for a living! I let them go! How could this be?

But one recipe survives in my own records. One she shared with me when I was a newlywed and in search of an impressive dessert to take to my new in-laws’ Christmas party.

Lemon Breeze

1 cup flour
1 stick margerine (melted)
1 cup chopped pecans

Combine, mix well, press into a 9x9 glass dish or an 8x11 sprayed with Pam. Bake 15 to 20 minutes at 350.

8 oz cream cheese
1 cup powdered sugar

1 cup Cool Whip

Beat well, Pour on cooled crust.

3 cups cold milk
2 pkgs (3 oz) lemon instant pudding

Beat until it starts to thicken
Pour on cream cheese layer, Refrigerate
Top with Cool Whip and sprinkle with pecans
